Real Ear Measurements

A hearing aid is designed to improve the wearer’s ability to hear clear sounds. It helps in a better understanding of the speech and sounds. But, often many people don’t feel happy about the results. This happens due to the poor performance of the hearing aids. So, if you are disappointed with the quality and performance of your hearing aid or need the best hearing loss solutions, real ear measurements will help improve your overall experience.

What is REM or Real Ear Measurement?

Real Ear Measurement is also known as the probe microphone measurement. It is a test that most professional audiologists perform to check if a hearing aid user is getting the right amount of sound boost for the best hearing quality.

This test is practically an excellentway to check whether a hearing aid is working properly. In this process, the REM measures whether actual sounds and frequencies are reaching the ear, instead of completely trusting the hearing aid’s computer settings or the user’s feedback.

100 percent improvement in patients suffering from severe hearing loss is impossible. However, real ear measurement increases the effectiveness of the hearing aids. As a result, patients experience improved hearing even in critical cases as much as possible.

What is the process for Real Ear Measurement?

The REM is performed when a person gets the hearing aids for the first time. The test is done instantly during the fitting for those who have worn it before. But, for new users, it is done within two weeks of getting the aid. The reason behind this is that new users require some time to get used to hearing sounds again before it is adjusted.

How it Works

Once the hearing aid is put in the ears, a tiny thin microphone is gently placed inside the ear canal. At first, the audiologist checks if the person can properly hear a recorded conversation without the hearing aid. After that, they take the same test using the hearing aid with the microphone placed close to it.

The microphone records the exact pitch the patient is getting from the hearing aid. This time the audiologist incorporates various speech samples. It is done to check how the hearing aid is performing at different sound levels.

The audiologist can fine-tune the hearing aid based on the collected data. It is done to align with the patient’s hearing needs as closely as possible.

The process of REM is simple and quick. It takes anywhere between five minutes to twenty minutes. XYZ includes the real ear measures during the fitting process of the patient.

REM ensures the best results from the hearing aids. It provides the exact level of sound boost that the patient needs. So, no longer the problem of dealing with sounds being too loud or some voices being extremely soft and difficult to understand. The pitch is adjusted in a way that the patient will hear the sounds just right, comfortably.

The effect of REM can significantly improve the quality of a patient’s hearing.  So, almost every audiologist offers it during the fitting process.
